You might know him as one of two Prime Mover party train conductors (this man loves a boozy beverage!), maybe you’ve seen him sprinting at the speed of light in sessions, throwing around heavy weights, or simply giving a hug & a smile to another member who was in need of a pick-me-up. However you’ve come to know him, I’m sure you’ll agree the guy is downright lovely.
When Andy started at Prime Mover in July 2015, he was a type 2 diabetic who weighed 85kg. He started his journey doing 2-3 MetAttack classes per week for the first six months before progressing onto Performance classes.
Now much lighter on his feet at 73kg, Andy is a total rockstar at PM. Not only has he lost the weight, but he’s added on a great amount of muscle as well. And the most impressive bit of all – he’s managed to completely reverse his Type 2 Diabetes diagnoses all through living his healthy new lifestyle. Below he shares the brilliant story of his journey to a healthier life…
How have you changed since beginning with Prime Mover (physically and mentally)?
Wow…interesting one. It’s been one hell of a journey and experience! I am far more empathetic to the plight and journey of others since undertaking my own. My healthy journey started before PM, but has been reinforced here. I’ve encountered a fair few members and listened to their journey, read all the posts on Facebook about everyone’s internal battles and successes, and by understanding how people feel it makes me better at interacting with folk.
I’m far less critical than I used to be, realising my criticism was a reflection of my own shortcomings and fears!
My mental challenge in each session is to not stop, to push, and never quit! It’s a challenge, but that’s what makes it fun!
Physically I’m stronger, I never fully understood how important ‘core’ strength was in every exercise, so increasing it and focusing on this made a big change in my performance.
How has working with Danny impacted your success and life in general?
Danny helped to ‘fix’ me. I have always suffered with chronic shoulder pain, as a result of several dislocations as a teen, which I never really did any proper rehab exercises for. In March 2016, I crashed my motorbike and really hurt my shoulder, at this point I started working with Danny on my rebuild. I now don’t have any pain or discomfort for the first time in 20 years!
I’m enthused by all my sessions with Danny. He raises the bar and always seems to sense when I need my next challenge. His training ethos works for me, I get pushed when I need pushing
What has been your biggest health/fitness related achievement since joining PM?
Reversing my Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis.
What is your favourite exercise and why?
Bench Press – it’s the one exercise I can get angry at haha!
What is one thing you couldn’t do when you started that you’re awesome at now?
Awesome isn’t a word I’d use to describe my own performance, but one thing I wanted to be able to do was a flat Ab wheel roll out! I couldn’t do it before, but now I’m a happy rep bunny!
If you had to describe PM in 3 words they would be:
Challenging, Supportive, Real
What is the most valuable thing PM has taught you?
To be Nice! Everyone is on a journey and most are strangers at the beginning. You never know how far someone has come or what they had to endure to the point you meet them!
If we all tried to help people ‘win’ in life with no other agenda, just think how much easier your daily commute would be, the trip round the supermarket… just be nice!
Oh and shots…. how to do shots… I’ve never done as many shots in my life before joining PM! Call it balance haha!
What keeps you motivated to keep coming to the gym so consistently?
I’ll never be totally happy with how I look, but it’s becoming less important. I’ve started to view my weight loss scars as a symbol of where I have come from, but the thing that keeps me going is the fact that I like current ‘me’ and didn’t like unhealthy fat ‘me’ as well as training with some really great, inspirational people. I don’t want to go back…the thought both frightens and motivates me at the same time!
What is your most memorable moment at PM?
Simple – ‘You got this!’
It’s a bit of a mantra, it was said to me early on at a point where I was struggling. It’s what my head says when I think I want to quit. It was during Sunday sprints when I was really struggling in the early days, I started to laugh between forced breaths – the thought ‘I’ve got this’ had come to mind…because I had! I could do it, I just had to believe I could. This was a game changer for me.
What is your biggest health/fitness related goal for 2017?
It’s changing! Currently, it’s to complete a few endurance events, such as the Sheffield Half Marathon and a Tough Mudder that I’ve booked. This is also a mental challenge for me, as everyone knows #ihaterunning!
I want to be stronger, so that I am healthier when I get older. I also want to maintain a happy, healthy weight.
