Almost exactly one year ago to the day, Catherine was sitting by the pool on holiday…fully clothed.
She’d been through a tough year dealing with various family illnesses and as a result had lost her own way. As a very keen swimmer she was gutted to have to put her hobby on the back burner, but her family needed her during that time so she did what she had to.
It wasn’t until she was on that holiday last summer, unable to fit into any of her swimming costumes, that she realised just how “out of shape” she’d become. While abroad, she happened to see the 21 Day Transformation on Facebook and figured she could put up with three weeks in a gym if it meant she could hit the pool again, so she signed up.
Little did she know that those three weeks would turn into a full year and totally change her life along the way. Now 17kg lighter and a whole lot happier, Catherine shares her Prime Mover transformation story…
How many times per week do you attend classes?
I am currently doing 2-3 sessions per week alongside 2 swim training sessions
How long did you do MetAttacks before progressing onto the weights classes?
I actually haven’t yet! I am starting on Aphrodite this month though and very excited to see what I can do with weights. I have started throwing in the odd Spartan though, thanks to encouragement from Ross!
How have you changed since beginning with Prime Mover (physically and mentally)?
So the question people always ask first – “What have you lost?” … over 17kg, 20cms from my abs, 14cms from my waist etc. plus a whole lot of self-doubt!
I have gained so much more – I feel more energised, generally happier, more confident and have met some wonderfully caring, supportive and funny people along the way
What has been your biggest health/fitness related achievement since joining PM?
Well, the target I set myself when I joined was to be able to return to the Great North Swim and record my best time over 2 miles. Open water swimming is a fickle thing so I didn’t actually beat my time but I rose to 3rd place in my age and gender category (previous best was 15th!!!) so that was HUGE and it took a long time to come down from that high!
What is your favourite exercise and why?
Hmm I have a few but I think the prowler comes out tops – it is punishing but I have felt myself improving at it – to the point where I try and save it to last – erm as a treat?
What is one thing you couldn’t do when you started that you’re awesome at now?
That flipping tyre lol! I recall the horror when Scotty first demonstrated it to me and had to help me to actually get it off the floor (not to mention the bruises on my thighs).
If you had to describe PM in 3 words:
Supportive, Effective, Transformational
What is the most valuable thing PM has taught you?
Never to listen to the voice in your head that says you aren’t capable.
What would you tell someone who was thinking about progressing beyond MetAttacks?
Absolutely go for it – I really enjoy the extra challenge of a Spartan. Also, just take a peek through that window in the City site and see the grins on all the faces of the people in the weights room – they can’t all be wrong can they?
What keeps you motivated to keep coming to the gym so consistently?
I’m actually a bit addicted! I found myself wondering if I could squeeze in a Dirty Dozen and get home before my daughter brought me breakfast in bed on my birthday! Going to the gym has become as routine as going to work or swimming, it’s just part of my life now
What is your most memorable moment at PM?
Probably the look of sympathy on Paul’s face when I told him that session was my second ever! (I had just waddled in looking like John Wayne!)
What is your biggest health/fitness related goal for the next few months?
Not a goal as such but I am looking forward to joining Aphrodite and getting the lifting experience (although I have a real soft spot for the MetAttack classes). I’m also going to have a go at my first run in 30 years in a couple of weeks (!) Then it will be back to concentrating on getting to no 1 in the Great North Swim 🙂
