I remember Angela’s first session like it was yesterday. She strolled into PM1, chatty as ever, and told me she was ready to make a change. She told me she had been drinking a bottle of wine a night and was fed up with it now. “Once I get something in my head, I stick to it fully” she told me.
She wasn’t kidding either! After those initial 21 days, Angela had lost 4kg and cms from all over her body, but what she gained in herself was so much more. Now nine months later, Angela has created a new life that is she proud of and in just a couple months she will be taking on her biggest challenge yet…
When did you start at PM? What made you come?
My first day at PM was 10th October 2016. I had gotten myself into a rut, I wasn’t necessarily a bad eater, but I was drinking a bottle of wine most nights because I felt miserable and unhappy with myself. I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror, so instead of getting dressed up and going out I would put on my PJs and drink wine instead. Once I’d finished the wine, I would eat junk food with the view that I would “start again tomorrow.” I was fed up with myself, but couldn’t seem to sort it out. I saw the 21DT on Facebook and half-heatedly filled it in, after getting a call from Scotty who was bubbly and positive, I signed right up.
How has your life changed since coming here? What is now different than it was before?
My life has changed dramatically. I don’t sit and wallow in self-pity anymore, I have found a place that works for me. I love the positivity and dynamics that Prime Mover brings and how it has influenced my lifestyle. I still don’t always get it right, but I’d say I have a bottle per MONTH now on average. Although I’m not tee total, I do make better choices, I have new friends, a new lifestyle, and 80% of the time I’m making better choices overall.
What have you learned since joining PM?
I’ve stopped being so negative towards myself. We are all on our own individual journeys and I now accept that I don’t have to be perfect.
How has it impacted you mentally and physically?
My mindset has massively changed. In the past, if I made a poor food choice at the start of the day I would think screw it, I’ve ruined it now anyway, and carry on making crappy choices the rest of the day. I would then beat myself up for making those choices, it was quite the rollercoaster! I still have setbacks now, but they don’t rule me. I have done the 21DT three times now and it always helps to reset my mind.
Physically, I am lighter, stronger, and a lot fitter than I was before. Even breaking my foot didn’t stop me, I carried on doing my PT with Danny the Legend, who simply adjusted all of my training to accommodate my injury and keep my sane! If that had happened a year ago I would have used it as an excuse to be a couch potato.
So tell us about your upcoming adventure of climbing Kilimanjaro:
Last year I made the decision to raise money for a charity close to my heart. I love trekking, so when the opportunity to climb Kilimanjaro was presented to me, I accepted the challenge. We head out on 16 September, 2017 and I will be sure to share a picture of me on the summit. My training has had a little set back due to my broken foot, but I have no doubt I’ll be ready in time!
What will it mean to you to accomplish this?
Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro is the top of my bucket list. I’m lead to believe it’s one hell of a life-changing experience, but the biggest achievement to me will be the money I’ve raised to help people who are less fortunate than me after suffering a brain injury. What would you tell someone else who was thinking of making a big leap like this?
I’d say, go for it! If there is something you need in life, however big or small, if it’s important to you – just do it. Make sure you research it though and are fully prepared so that you have the best chance of achieving it. It’s your journey!
What does the charity you’ve chosen mean to you?
This charity supports most recovering brain injuries from 16+ in the Yorkshire region. The most inspiring thing about this trust is the results patients achieve. I observed a 24-year-old client who had been told he’d never walk again, walk out with only one stick as a walking aid two years later. It’s an amazing facility and I feel amazing knowing the money I raise will play a massive part in making families smile again.
