Today we’re going to talk about the concept of being the director of your own movie – and by movie, I mean your LIFE.
The thing that amazing film directors, such as Steven Spielberg and James Cameron, have in common is their ability to have a vision. When they’re creating their films, they don’t just film a load of shit and see how it comes together. No, what they do is read a script and visualise all of the different scenes – the layout of the battlefield, city, boardroom, whatever it is. They’re constantly visualising and it’s their vision that becomes the awesome film that we see.
So, how does this work in real life? Well, if we don’t try to have some vision in our lives, if we’re not directing our own movie, then how is it going to end up?
Great lives don’t happen by accident.
You need to know where you’re going, what you’re wanting to achieve. You wouldn’t get in a taxi and just sit there, right? No, you would tell the taxi driver where you want to go. It’s the same with life, you need to work out where you want to go!
It seems that some people find this pointless and not worth doing, but let me ask you what’s more stupid – taking the time to reflect on what you truly want in life or just leaving it up to chance and just seeing what happens?
I mean, if you left your fitness up to chance for example, what would happen? If you don’t make yourself go to the gym, running, or whatever it is you like to do, what happens then? Well, your fitness will likely get worse, you’ll end up totally regressing. It’s the same with your life, you need to put the effort in to see progress. If you want to reach your goals, you can’t just let things happen around you.
I want you to start thinking about what you truly want. Let’s use weight loss as an example, a lot of people come to Prime Mover and tell us they want to lose a stone, which at the time might feel unachievable to them. However, once they’ve lost that initial stone, then 1.5 stone feels possible, then 2 stone and so on.
I can even use myself as an example here, when I first started on my journey all I wanted was to not be in a size 38 jeans anymore. I never thought I’d get to where I am now. I didn’t think I’d become a personal trainer, start a boot camp, and ultimately open Prime Mover. I just knew I wanted to lose weight and before I knew it, each step then opened another door.
So, what I’m trying to say is that whatever things you want to achieve in the grand vision of your life might seem completely ridiculous now, but as you start working towards them they start to actually feel achievable. All you have to do is JUST START.
To channel your focus into your true vision it can really help to write down what’s most important to you. At one point, I felt like I didn’t know what the hell I was doing, so I sat down and wrote the things that were important to me. I wrote down what kind of life I would want to live, what I would want to do, where I would want to go.
This will help you to work out what you need to do now in order to get where you want to go. For the most part, when you break it all down, you’ll find it’s not actually that out of reach anyway. There might just be a few things you need to change, like not spending money on pointless things for example, so you can then afford to do XYZ (whatever it is you put on your list).
If you went on Netflix and watched a film that was terrible – would you watch it again the night after? And the night after that? No, you’d be lucky if you even got through it the first time, right?
Well, a lot of people don’t like the movie that is their life, but they continue to live it exactly the same again and again and again without ever doing anything about it.
So, my message for you today is to reflect on what it is you truly want out of your life. When I first did it, I completed a 1 year, 3 year, and 5 year vision. I quickly realised that I could actually achieve the 3 year vision in less than 12 months if I just changed a few things. It really can be that simple!
I encourage you to take the time to work out what’s most important to you, the people who are important to you, and what you want most out of life. Start with that and work from there. Break it down into smaller, more achievable chunks, work at it every day and before you know it your life will become everything that you want it to be!
