When it comes to actualizing our best selves, there are often people who get in the way (intentionally or not) of us being successful on our journeys. I have narrowed down the five types of people in our lives who are most likely to get in the way – we will refer to them as our Nemeses (plural for Nemesis) and what we can do to work around them.
Is it a reasonable to place the blame on someone else for our inability to reach our goals? Nope, not one bit. At the end of the day our success is 100% down to us. However, we have found that the five nemeses are the biggest obstacles when it comes to our clients reaching their health & fitness goals. So with that in mind, we will be going into detail about how each Nemesis might hinder us and what you can do to work around it if you identify with that one.
You might find these topics a bit touchy, but that just demonstrates that it’s something you may need to work on. Yes, it might be uncomfortable at first, but it’s worth the effort to reach your biggest goals! So, without further ado – our first Nemesis…
If you have children, then you will be well aware of how taxing they can be on you time. You have to get them up in the morning, make sure they’re dressed, teeth are cleaned, and tummies are full before driving them to school. Next thing you know you’re fetching them back from school, driving them to an after school activity, staying to watch them at said practice, taking them home, making sure they’re fed, they’ve done their homework, they’re showered, then putting them to bed. Phew!
Now, think back over your day. Did you take any time for yourself? Was the only time you could make it to the gym at 6am before the kids were up, but you were so tired from the day before you just couldn’t face it? We completely understand that it can be challenging fitting it all in, but if what you want most is to introduce healthy habits that will last a lifetime, then one less hour in bed is a sacrifice worth making if you ask us!
Maybe you don’t have a partner to stay home with your little ones while you go to the gym – what can you do then? We suggest finding an activity that you can get the kids involved in too. We have some clients who do the Prime Mover app workouts at home with their kids and say that the kiddos absolutely love joining in. Is this something you could do too?
One of our clients, Natalie, recently started horse riding lessons with her little girl. Not only does this feed into Natalie’s sense of self by rekindling her love for an activity she did as a child, but it also allows her to bond with her daughter as they ride together. Is there an activity you could sign up to with your daughter or son too?
So maybe you’ve got the whole exercise thing nailed – fantastic! However, you find that your downfall when it comes to health is in your nutrition. After years of working with clients who have children, we have found one of the most common excuses for poor nutrition is that they have food in the house that isn’t in line with their goals (i.e. crisps, biscuits, buns).
Well, something to consider here is this – if that food is something you wouldn’t want to put in your own body, why would you want your children eating it? We know the kids might not be pleased initially, but aim to slowly limit the amount of “junk” food you have lying around the house and replace it with nutrient dense foods (that are often even more delicious!). If it’s not in the house, then it’s far less likely that you’ll eat it.
If you feel that your kids are a nemesis to you actualising your best self, it’s important to realise that it’s not them that’s the problem, it’s you. You completely have the power to take control of your situation and turn it around. What changes can you implement today that will positively impact your family and push you closer to reaching that vision of your best self?
